Dyson Sphere | Can We Make A Dyson Sphere Around The Sun? Dyson Sphere Star

Dyson Sphere

What do you think, can we build a Dyson's Sphere around the sun? Or, first of all, is there anything known as Dyson's Sphere? Is it just a hypothetical thing, imagined by us or do we have any proof of its existence?
Humans have not yet reached any level on the basis of civilization. We are trying everything to advance our technology each and every day. This is not only possible if we do more and more researches, but also have the accessibility of resources and energy. And as we know, the way we are wasting Earth's energy, its resources will vanish soon in a very short span of time. So to maintain our development, we need a direct source of energy. And in this case, we definitely look at the sun. But, most of the sun's energy gets wasted in the deep space only. So to prevent this energy from getting wasted, Freeman Dyson, in 1960, launched a written paper in which he introduced the concept of Dyson's Sphere. So, in this article we will clear everything about Dyson's Sphere that you all need to know.

Dyson's Sphere

Dyson Sphere Around the Sun
An illustration of how Dyson Sphere can look around the sun.

Dyson Sphere is a hypothetical mega structure that completely encircle a star and consumes its all energy output. In simple words, if we take sun as a reference, it is like a solar panel surrounded all around the sun in a spherical form. This idea is based on the energy produced by solar panels as they convert sunlight into electricity. Just like that, it is assumed to make a large structure all around the sun, which can capture all of it's light energy and convert into electric or any other form of energy. However, doing this is not that easy as it seems. Working on this idea, will not only consume time, labor and money, but we also do not have sufficient amount of resources. Let us find out about the possibilities of making a Dyson's Sphere around sun.

Can we make a Dyson's Sphere around the sun?

So first of all, we all know about how much heat and energy sun radiates. And we have no element which can withstand this heat. So the first and the biggest hurdle in making this hypothetical structure around the sun is the absence of the substance which can compete with sun's energy. Another problem is the vast space itself. In this vast space, there are a plenty of asteroids and meteors which may pass from our human-made structure and destroy a part of it.
Also, gravitational force of sun is many times more than that of Earth. So, if sun is surrounded by something, then it will not outstay for long. And it is more difficult when we don't have any idea or model of this sphere.
But, it does not prove that this project is completely hypothetical and impossible. Not on Earth, but this is may be still possible on other star systems. Yes, we will now discuss about the proof of existence of Dyson Sphere.

Dyson Sphere Star

Dyson Sphere Star

On 14 October 2015, a team of astronomers got surprised when they saw a star, around 1470 light years away from us, fluctuating in Cygnus constellation. Cygnus is a northern constellation lying on the plane of Milky Way galaxy.
The name of this flickering star is KIC 8462852 which is also named as Tabby's Star. However, there could be many reasons for a star to fluctuate but there was something special about this one. While fluctuating, this star was showing a total of 22% dimming in its brightness. This resulted in formation of many theories, but the one which is most renowned was that of Dyson Sphere. It is assumed that aliens have made a megastructure around that star and they are using all of its energy. If this case is real, then we will also find a civilization which has already reached the second stage of civilization on the basis of Kardashev Scale.

By all this, we may conclude that the construction of a Dyson Sphere is actually possible. Although it may look impossible, but we should not forget that internet was also an impossible thing 300 years back. But now, it is so common that in today's generation no one is surprised of its existence. Similarly, as we progress slowly, we will shape such that, what looks impossible today, will become common to us in some years.

  1. Yes! That's really true! We can't even imagine what all we can imagine when we get to know/ gets what all we can imagine now...
